Symptoms Of TMJ

TMJ stands for Temporomandibular Joint, which is the joint in the temple area where the lower jaw pivots against the skull. TMJ syndrome (also called TMD, for Temporomandibular Joint Disorder) is a collection of symptoms all resulting from a defect in the way the jaw joint works.

Because there are some large nerves running through the temple area, across the face and head, and down the neck to the shoulders, pain can be felt in any of these areas, all from stress in the way your jaw joint operates.

Reasons why you might develop TMJ

· A blow to the head, which knocks the joint out of position.
· An inherited flaw in the structure or positioning of the jaws.
· Many years of teeth grinding, or gum-chewing. This can generate stress in the whole joint area and can wear down the cartilage pad, which buffers the jawbones; it’s supposed to protect the upper and lower jawbones from rubbing directly against each other. When it’s worn, or out of position, and the bones rub on each other, pain is generated.
· Misaligned teeth, which cause the lower jaw to meet the upper jaw in a tense position. This is called dental malocclusion, or a misaligned bite.

Common symptoms

You may be suffering from TMJ if you have:

· Severe headaches
· Earaches
· Ringing in the ears
· Worn teeth
· A clicking noise when opening or closing your jaw
· The jaw getting locked or stuck
· Swelling around the jaw joint
· Tenderness or pain around the jaw joint
· Pain in your neck or shoulders
· Tingling in the fingers
· Dizziness

These symptoms can emerge in different combinations for different people. They are not all located exactly in the jaw. Why not? That’s because large nerves run from the spinal column to the head area, with many branches extending into the face, neck and shoulders. When swelling and inflammation compresses any of these nerve branches, pain is felt at that location. The swelling and inflammation originates with the jaw joint and its muscles, and can spread, affecting different nerve branches in different people.

The role of neuromuscular dentistry

A neuromuscular dentist is one trained in treating not just gums and teeth, but also the jaw joint and its components: muscles, nerves, ligaments and blood vessels. Dr. Joseph Henry is a neuromuscular dentist in Los Angeles. Often, by the time people arrive at his office for help with their painful symptoms, they have visited a series of doctors in a fruitless search for pain relief.

“Too many people think their TMJ symptoms are incurable, but that’s not true,” says Dr. Henry. “It’s possible to eliminate all TMJ symptoms with the technology now used by neuromuscular dentists. When the symptoms have a dental cause, it’s a dentist who can successfully treat them and relieve the pain.”

TMJ treatment

Treatment begins with neuromuscular testing. The root of the problem is misalignment in the jaw joint – a misaligned bite. So your jaw movements and positions will be tested, recorded, and measured. If the jaw is closing such that the lower teeth are colliding with parts of the upper teeth, this too will be examined. The neuromuscular dentist will focus on the relationship between jaw movement and teeth position to discover what is preventing your jaw from being relaxed.

Once the dentist finds your natural relaxed jaw position, further treatment is then planned. It will be different for each person. It might involve a special tray to be worn for a few months, to teach your jaw muscles some new movements. It might require some repositioning of teeth, or reshaping.

You don’t have to live with those painful symptoms. Modern dentistry is a far cry from what our grandparents knew. Dental technology these days has made dental procedures much faster and easier, it has created more ways to treat dental problems, and made everything increasingly pain-free.

Your Dog Dental Health

Your dog's dental health is so important for his total well-being... and for guaranteeing him a long and happy life. So don't give him the brush-off! Make tooth cleaning a daily ritual that your dog will look foward to as something the two of you do together.

To start, you'll have to get your doggy used to you fumbling around in his mouth. Ease him into it with a total-body pat-down; a chassis inspection that ideally should be performed on him each day. Have him sit while you examine his body to make sure everything is in working order and there aren't any weird objects or critters lodged in unexpected places. Run your hands over his back and sides. Lift each paw and check the pads of his feet and between his toes. Gently lift his ears and peek inside. (If you see something peeking back at you, run away quickly!)

When you get to his mouth, approach with caution. Gently pull his lips back for a view of that magnificent gumline. Your dog’s teeth should be cushioned snugly by a set of pink gums. A healthy gumline is naturally bumpy... so if your dog’s gums appear straight rather than wavy, inflamed and/or cover most of the tooth surface, that's a sign of trouble ahead. When WAS the last time you were in for a checkup?

If your dog is getting, well, long in the tooth, it's probably a good idea to take him for a dental workup at the vet's office before you officially start your daily dental hygiene routine at home. Either way, discuss dental hygiene with your vet before beginning a daily toothcare regimen.

Okay: it's time to introduce your pal to "tooth brushing a la human." You can purchase a dog toothbrush at your local Petsmart or other pet store. Try the traditional people-style brush with a handle, or if you’re sure you won’t lose a hand in his mouth, go for the rubber finger cap toothbrush that fits right over the tip of your index finger. Buy special dog toothpaste which comes in delightful flavors that appeal to dogs, like beef and chicken and the ever-popular cat flavor (joke). You can also brush his teeth with a salt water solution. Whatever you do... do NOT brush your dog’s teeth with people toothpaste. He can't be taught to spit like a human, and people toothpaste is most definitely harmful if swallowed.

Offer your dog a little taste of the special dog toothpaste to get him used to it. Let him take a few licks and nibbles of the toothbrush. When he's finished sampling the goods, nudge the brush into his mouth. Brush in circular motions along and under the gum line, paying extra attention to the upper molars in back. This is where plaque accumulates the most rapidly. Go from back to front, and be patient! This is a new and strange sensation for your dog, and he may even try to play a little tug of war with the toothbrush since you're at the other end of it. Don’t expect a miracle the first time you try to brush your dog's teeth. Next time should be a bit easier, and the time after that even moreso.

Train your dog to associate tooth-brushing with fun times. Talk to him and make it fun! When he's all finished and showing off those freshly buffed fangs of his, give him a crunchy treat that also does double-duty as a plaque controller. Take him out for his daily walk. Tell him what a good boy he is! In time, he’ll grow to accept toothbrushing as just another pleasant ritual in his doggy day.

What You Must Do If You Have A Tooth Extraction

After an extraction, it's important for a blood clot to form to stop the bleeding and begin the healing process right on the enamel. That's why your dentist will always ask you to bite on a gauze pad for about 30 to 45 minutes after an extraction. If bleeding or oozing of blood continues after you remove the gauze pad, place another gauze pad on the area which is been affected and bite firmly for another 30 minutes. You may have to do this several times before it finally get healed.

After the blood clot has formed, it's important to protect it from been exposed to unclean materials and dirt particules, especially for the next 24 hours. It's important so as to prevent it from:

• drinking alcohol

• smoke and chew tobacco

• suck through a straw

• clean the teeth next to the extraction site

• rinse your mouth vigorously

These activities could dislodge the clot and slow down healing.

Limit yourself to calm activities for the first 24 hours. That is, stay away from undue stress of the body and let it rest. This keeps your blood pressure lower, reduces bleeding, and helps the healing process to be fast.

After the tooth has been extracted, you may feel some pain and have some swelling on your enamel. You can use an ice bag for about (20 minutes on, 20 minutes off) to keep this to a minimum temperature. The swelling usually starts to go down after 48 hours of the ice bag placement.

In order to control discomfort after the extraction of your tooth, it is advisable that you take pain medication as recommended by the physicial or the dentist. Don't take medication on an empty stomach or else nausea may result. If antibiotics are prescribed, continue to take them for the indicated length of time been prescribed to you, even if all symptoms and signs of infection are gone. Also:

• Eat only soft, nutritious foods on the day of the extraction.

• Always avoid hot and spicy foods.

• Never use alcoholic beverages.

• And drink lots of fluids.

You can begin eating normally the next day after the extraction and all other recommendation principles had been followed and strictly adhered to, or if not by then, as soon as it is comfortable for you to swallow a meal with it. Gently rinse your mouth with warm salt water three times a day (put a teaspoon of salt in a cup of warm water, and then gently rinse, swish, and spit). Also, rinse gently after meals so as to help keep food out of the extraction site.

It is of paramount important to go back your normal dental routine after 24 hours. Which should include brushing your teeth and tongue and flossing at least once a day. This will speed up the healing and help keep your breath and mouth fresh. Call to your dental doctor right away if you have severe pain, as a result of heavy bleeding continued swelling after two or three days, or a reaction to the medication. After a few days, you will be feeling fine and can resume your normal activities and duties.

Dry socket is an infection in your tooth socket after a tooth has been extracted. The condition is usually seen to have developed whenever a blood clot fails to form in the socket, or if the blood clot comes loose. Dry socket occurs in approximately 5 percent of all tooth extractions.

Normally, the blood clot that forms after a tooth is removed promotes healing of the tooth, laying the foundation for the growth of new bone tissue which will later result to a new tooth. When dry socket occurs, this blood clot is lost and the infected, inflamed socket will appear empty - and thats the name. Nerves are exposed, and sometimes the bone is visible to be seen in the empty socket.

And the worst part of this is that, may not have symptoms if there would be tooth extraction until 3 to 5 days after the extraction. Then, the condition will manifest itself as severe pain that doesn't subside, often accompanied by what feels like an earache, with intermitent echoing of your in your ear drum causing a noise polution. You may also have an unpleasant taste in your mouth, and bad breath. Call your dentist right away if you notice any symptoms of dry socket. Treatment for dry socket typically includes a gentle rinsing of the socket and dressing the socket with sedative medication as prescribed by a health personnel.

It's is a source of bad breath. If you had a cut on you face and it starts to bleed, would you leave it unattended too?

Tooth Bleaching

Tooth bleaching, also known as tooth whitening, is a common procedure in general dentistry but most especially in the field of cosmetic dentistry. Many people consider white teeth to be an attractive feature of a smile. A child's deciduous teeth are generally whiter than the adult teeth that follow. As a person ages the adult teeth often become darker. This darkening is due to changes in the mineral structure of the tooth, as the enamel becomes less porous. Teeth can also become stained by bacterial pigments, foodstuffs and tobacco.

As white teeth are subconsciously associated with youth, they have become desirable. This has been made more apparent with the spread of American culture worldwide, where an especially white smile is coined a "Hollywood smile". The procedure to bleach teeth uses oxidising agents such as hydorgen peroxide orcarbamide peroxide
to lighten the shade of the tooth. The oxidising agent penetrates the porosities in the rod-like crystal structure of enamel and oxidises interprismatic stain deposits; over a period of time, the dentine layer, lying underneath the enamel, is also bleached.

Methods

There are two main methods of bleaching. The first involves applying a high concentration of oxidising agent for a short period of time, which is the so-called office bleach. This produces quick results but risks chemical burns to the soft tissues. Therefore, most in-office bleaching procedures use a light-cured protective layer that is carefully painted on the gums and papilla (the tips of the gums between the teeth). The bleaching agent is either carbamide peroxide, which breaks down in the mouth to form hydrogen peroxide, or hydrogen peroxide itself. The bleaching gel typically contains up to 35% hydrogen peroxide equivalent.

The alternative method involves using a thin mouthguard or strip to hold a low concentration of oxidising agent next to the teeth for as long as several hours a day for a period of 5 to 14 days. This is known as take-home or over-the-counter bleaching. This is a slower process but has fewer risks to the soft tissues. The bleaching agent is typically less than 10% hydrogen peroxide equivalent.

A typical course of bleaching can produce dramatic improvements in the cosmetic appearance of most stained teeth; however, some stains do not respond to bleaching. Tetracycline staining may require prolonged bleaching, as it takes longer for the bleach to reach the dentine layer. White-spot decalcifications may also be highlighted and become more noticeable. Bleaching is least effective if your teeth have white spots, decay or infected gums. It is also least effective when the original tooth color is grayish. Bleaching is most effective with yellow discolored teeth.

Recently, efforts have been made to accelerate the bleaching process by the use of light. Studies have shown varying results as to the efficacy of light-activated bleaching.

Side effects of tooth bleaching include: chemical burns (if a high-concentration oxidising agent contacts unprotected tissues, which may bleach or discolor mucous membranes), sensitive teeth, and overbleaching (known in the profession as "over white teeth"). Rebound, or teeth losing the bleached effect and darkening, is also an issue, with some studies showing the rebound effect over 30 days. A recent study by Kugel et al has shown that as much as 4 shades of lightness can be lost over 30 days with light-activated/office bleaching.

Risks

The two side effects that occur most often are a temporary increase in tooth sensitivity and mild irritation of the soft tissues of the mouth, particularly the gums.Tooth sensitivity often occurs during early stages of the bleaching treatment. Tissue irritation most commonly results from an ill-fitting mouthpiece tray rather than the tooth-bleaching agent. Both of these conditions usually are temporary and disappear within 1 to 3 days of stopping or completing treatment.

Individuals with sensitive teeth and gums, receding gums and/or defective restorations should consult with their dentist prior to using a tooth whitening system . Anyone allergic to peroxide (the whitening agent) should not use a bleaching product. Also, prolonged exposure to bleaching agents may damage tooth enamel. This is especially the case with home remedy whitening products that contain fruit acids.

Bleaching is not recommended in children under the age of 16. This is because the pulp chamber, or nerve of the tooth, is enlarged until this age. Teeth whitening under this condition could irritate the pulp or cause it to become sensitive. Teeth whitening is also not recommended in pregnant or lactating women.

Internal bleaching

Internal bleaching procedures are performed on devitalized teeth that have undergone endodontic therapy but are unesthetic due to internal staining of the tooth structure by blood and other fluids that leached in.
